A stroll on beach that isn't crowded, no roads, no big buildings and best of all, little to no ambient noise "from busy city stuff" is probably the best part of going to Shackleford Banks or Cape Lookout. Yes, there are plenty of people that visit and the sound of boats is fairly regular but, it's far more natural and relaxing than a typical public beach.
The list of possible things to do while on a eco tour is long, it really depends on what you're interested in as well as the time of year and weather conditions. Sightseeing, sun bathing, seashell hunting, bird watching, seeing wild horses, dolphin watching, sand dollar gathering, fishing, crabbing, cast netting, clamming, sandbar hopping, swimming, boat cruising and much more are all options.
Captain Chris Kimrey grew up in Carteret County and has spent his entire life on the water recreational fishing, commercial fishing, diving and is also a veteran of the US Navy. After his time in the US Navy as an electronics technician he moved back to the Crystal Coast, where he entered the waterman profession as a part time mate on several different boats while finishing up his Arts degree, USCG captains licensing and divemaster training. He started www.mountmakercharters.com and www.customsaltwatertaxidermy.com over 20 years ago, since has become a full time fishing guide spending 180-200 days a year on the water for the past 17 years. His years of experience, vast knowledge, passion and conservation minded approach to the coastal environment lead him to eco tourism as an additional part of his exsisting businesses.
We have two Pathfinder boats which are well maintained, fully licensed/permitted, fully insured, annually USCG inspected and outfitted with all USCG required safety gear. Most eco tours we run the smaller 22' boat because it is designed for shallow water increasing access to many areas as well as making loading/unloading much easier. If your group requires or request our bigger boat which is a 24' twin engine boat there will be a few limitations on places we can visit due to the draft of the bigger boat and there is a $100 additional fee.
We are centrally located at Portside Marina 209 Arendell street, Morehead City which is a short ride from Beaufort, Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, Salter Path, Indian Beach, Pine Knoll Shores, Cape Carteret, Swansboro, Newport, Jacksonville, New Bern, Harkers Island and all of eastern Carteret county. Portside Marina is located on the east end of the Morehead City waterfront, walking distance to all the shopping, restaurants and other downtown attractions.
